Introduction to the dsh-browsercontrol-mcp Plugin

Introduction

This is a plugin maintained by SciF-Lin, intended to provide real browser control capabilities for DeepSeek Harness. It mounts the official Playwright MCP as a native tool, allowing the agent to directly operate the browser environment actually used by the user, rather than a simulated environment.

Core Features

The plugin converts the capabilities of Playwright MCP into the mcp__playwright__* series of APIs in the tool table, covering the following operations:
* Navigation, clicking, form filling, key presses, dragging, file uploads
* Page snapshots, screenshots, console logs, network request monitoring
* JavaScript execution
* Supports three modes: launch (start), cdp (remote debugging), and extension (browser extension)

Installation and Enablement

The installation command is as follows:

dsh plugin --profile web add github:SciF-Lin/dsh-browsercontrol-mcp

After installation, the profile must be restarted for the changes to take effect. Newly installed bundles do not immediately participate in composition during hot reload.

Configuration Notes

Configure the corresponding plugin line in cordis.patch.yml. Key parameters include:

Key Default Value Description
serverName playwright Tool name prefix: mcp__<serverName>__browser_navigate
mode launch Running mode: launch (start browser), cdp (attach to a running browser), extension (extension mode)
browser msedge Browser type specified in launch mode: chrome | msedge | firefox | webkit
cdpEndpoint empty cdp target: Chromium channel name (e.g., msedge) or CDP URL (e.g., http://localhost:9222)
headless false Whether to run headless in launch mode
userDataDir empty Persistent profile directory for launch mode, used to retain login state
profileDirName empty Profile directory name to connect to in extension mode (e.g., Profile 1)
guideSetup open Authorization guidance in cdp mode: off (no guidance), auto (prompt only), open (automatically open the settings page)
toolCallTimeoutMs 120000 Timeout for a single tool call (milliseconds)
failOnStartupError false Whether to fail activation of that line when the first connection fails (default: only log)

Three Modes Explained

  1. launch (default)
Uses a browser already installed on the system, without downloading Chromium. Suitable for automation tasks.
  2. cdp
Takes over the browser currently running by the user. Note: Chromium 136+ requires enabling the remote debugging toggle in the browser UI (edge://inspect/#remote-debugging), rather than using a command-line parameter.
  3. extension
Connects via a browser extension. The Playwright Extension must be installed.

Security and Notes

  • Login State Visibility: In cdp or extension mode, the model can access information from all logged-in sites in the browser. It is recommended to configure a separate browser profile for automation tasks.
  • Conflict Handling: If a manually configured mcp-playwright line already exists in cordis.patch.yml, the plugin will skip mounting and log a warning.
  • Fault Tolerance: The plugin will not cause Harness to crash due to configuration errors. It will only log and skip mounting.
