dsh-wsl-workspace: Running DeepSeek Harness Sessions in a WSL Distribution

Introduction

The core design philosophy of DeepSeek Harness (DSH) is “everything is a plugin.” For users who need to develop in a Linux environment, running commands directly on local Windows is often limited. The dsh-wsl-workspace plugin solves this issue by allowing users to add a WSL workspace through the Web GUI and run the entire agent session (including bash commands and file operations) directly in a local WSL distribution.

What Is dsh-wsl-workspace

dsh-wsl-workspace is a client plugin for DeepSeek Harness, maintained by dsh-wsl-workspace-maintainers. It provides the ability to create and manage workspaces in a local WSL environment through the Web GUI. The plugin does not require any additional toolchain to be installed inside WSL, and it allows the agent to access the file system through Linux paths and execute bash commands.

Core Features

The plugin provides the following core capabilities:

  1. Workspace Management: Add and manage WSL workspaces directly in the DeepSeek Harness Web GUI.
  2. Local Execution: Run bash commands and perform file read/write operations in a specified WSL distribution.
  3. File Interoperability: Access the Windows file system through /mnt/<drive> paths, enabling file interoperability between WSL and Windows.
  4. Local Search: Run file search (grep/glob) inside the WSL distribution, using GNU grep for recursive search.
  5. Zero Dependencies: No toolchain or dependencies need to be installed inside WSL.

Installation and Enablement

Installing this plugin requires the DSH plugin installation command. After installation, the Web service must be restarted.

  1. Run the following command to install the plugin:
dsh plugin --profile web add dsh-wsl-workspace
  1. Restart the dsh web process.

  2. After the restart, a W button appears next to “Settings” at the bottom of the sidebar. Click it to open the “Add WSL Workspace” dialog.

Typical Usage

The steps to create a workspace using this plugin are as follows:

  1. Open the “Add WSL Workspace” dialog (click the W button in the sidebar).
  2. Select an installed WSL distribution from the list.
  3. Browse the directory tree or manually enter an absolute Linux path (for example, /home/user/project).
  4. Click the Check button to verify that the path exists, and confirm that it is correct before creating the workspace.
  5. In the “Username” field, leave it empty to run commands as the default user of the distribution, or enter a specific username to run the session. The username only affects the execution identity of the bash tool; file tools are not affected by this field.

Behavior and Notes

The following behavioral details should be noted during configuration and use:

  • Permissions and Isolation: The Windows ACL sandbox cannot wrap wsl.exe; therefore, WSL itself is the isolation boundary. The DSH file policy is not directly applied to the bash tool.
  • File Tools: File read, write, and edit operations are performed through the Windows-side WSL 9P share and are not affected by the username configuration.
  • File Search: File search runs inside the WSL distribution and uses GNU grep; the result format remains consistent with the host side.
  • Path Mapping: The paths seen by the agent are Linux paths, and Windows files are accessed through mount points such as /mnt/c.

This plugin is part of the DeepSeek Harness ecosystem. The community catalog provides detailed information about the plugin, and users can view the source code on GitHub.
