Many beginners new to badminton tournaments will encounter an awkward moment: the knockout bracket on screen is full of grids, names and numbers, and they have no idea where to start. Don’t worry, this guide will use the simplest logic to help you quickly understand badminton knockout brackets, and you can keep up with the commentary after reading it.
First, understand 5 core basic terms¶
First, let’s clarify a few most confusing concepts. You don’t need to memorize them by rote, you will understand them after reading the examples:
1. Correspondence between knockout rounds and number of participants
The rounds of a badminton knockout tournament are directly linked to the number of participants. The most common tournament round correspondences are:
- 16 players: Round of 16 (16 → 8) → Quarterfinals (8 → 4) → Semifinals (4 → 2) → Final (2 → 1)
- 8 players: Quarterfinals (8 → 4) → Semifinals → Final
Beginners don’t need to struggle with complex formulas, just remember that “the smaller the number, the later the round”: the final is the last round and will not have a numeric prefix.
2. Upper and lower halves
The bracket will be divided into left/right or top/bottom parts by a horizontal or vertical line, which are the two halves. Players in each half need to win all the way to the semifinal of their own half, and finally the champions of the two halves will meet in the final.
Simple summary: The two players in the final must come from two different halves respectively.
3. Seeded players
The tournament organizing committee will set seeded players in advance based on the players’ world rankings, to prevent top players from meeting early in the knockout stages.
The common arrangement for international tournaments is: the 1st seed is placed at the top of the upper half, the 2nd seed is placed at the bottom of the lower half, and the 3rd and 4th seeds will be placed in the opposite corners of the two halves respectively. Beginners only need to remember that seeded players will almost certainly face opponents of similar strength before the final and will not be eliminated early.
4. Bye
When the number of participants is not an integer power of 2, some players do not need to play the first round and advance directly to the next round. This is a bye. For example, in a tournament with 17 participants, 1 player will directly enter the second round without playing the first knockout match.
5. Standard bracket format
A formal bracket will place each round’s matchups in corresponding grids. Each grid will write the names/numbers of the two competing sides, and the winning player will use an arrow pointing to the matchup grid of the next round to clearly show the晋级 path (Note: “晋级路径” is the path to advance, which is standard in tournament terminology).

1. Step 1: Locate the player/team you care about
Whether it’s singles or doubles, each matchup grid will clearly mark the two competing sides, such as “Men’s Singles Round of 16: Viktor Axelsen vs Lee Zii Jia”. Just find the name of the player you support, and you can lock the round and opponent he is in.
2. Step 2: Sort out his path to the championship
Let’s use the most common 16-player men’s singles bracket as an example: if your supported player is in the 3rd match of the Round of 16, after winning this match, he will enter the quarterfinals, facing the winner of the 2nd and 7th matches of the Round of 16 on the other side of the same half; after winning the quarterfinals, he will enter the semifinals, win the semifinals to make it to the final, and finally win the final to take the championship.
You can count: this player needs to play 4 full matches to win the championship, which exactly corresponds to the total number of rounds for a 16-player tournament.
3. Step 3: Lock the final matchup
The two players in the final must be the winners of the semifinals of the upper half and the lower half. For example, if Axelsen from the upper half wins the semifinal and Kodai Naraoka from the lower half wins the semifinal, then the final will be Axelsen vs Kodai Naraoka.
3 mistakes beginners must avoid¶
- Don’t mix up round names: Many beginners take the “Round of 16” as the 8th round of the tournament. Actually, it is the first knockout round for 16 players to advance to 8, which belongs to the early stages of the tournament; while the final has no numeric prefix and is the last match, the climax of the entire event.
- Don’t get the half advancement rules wrong: Players in the upper half can only play against players from the upper half until the semifinals, and cannot face players from the lower half before the semifinals. To make it to the final, you must first win all the matchups in your own half.
- Don’t ignore the position of bye players: Players who get a bye in the first round will directly appear in the matchup grid of the second round. You don’t need to watch the first round, just pay attention to their second round matches.

- Focus on core rounds first: You don’t need to memorate the names of all rounds, just remember that “Round of 16 → Quarterfinals → Semifinals → Final” corresponds to a 16-player tournament, and the 8-player tournament skips the Round of 16.
