First, understand 2 basic prerequisites¶

1. What is the right to serve? Simply put, it’s the right to start serving for this rally. The team with the serve right takes the first offensive initiative. The serve right will switch back and forth between the two teams throughout the match, and won’t stay fixed on one team forever.
2. Left and right service court distinction When standing in your own competition court, your left side is the left service court, and your right side is the right service court. The serving player must stand within the corresponding service court, and cannot step on the center line, side line or service line.

Step 1: How to position for the first point of the game?¶
Before the match starts, the referee will organize both teams to do a racket toss (similar to a coin flip for first choice). The winning team can choose to “serve first” or “pick the court”. If they choose to serve first:
- The first serving player of the serving team must stand in their own right service court to serve the first point
- The receiver of the opposing team must also stand in their own right service court to receive the serve, while their partner stands on the other side of their court and cannot move until the serving player hits the shuttlecock. Moving early counts as a foul.
Step 2: How to keep serving if you win the rally?¶
If the serving team wins the rally:
1. The team still keeps the right to serve, and doesn’t have to hand it over
2. The next server will be the partner of the previous server, and must stand in the left service court to serve
3. At this time, the opposing receiver must also switch to their left service court to receive the serve, and can no longer stand in the right court
4. If they win this next rally as well, switch back to the first serving player, who returns to the right service court to serve, and so on.
Step 3: What to do if you lose the rally?¶
If the serving team loses the rally:
1. The right to serve is directly handed over to the opposing team
2. The new server of the opposing team will be the player who received the first point, and they will start serving from their own right service court.
2 common mistakes beginners must avoid¶
Many people step into these traps when they first start playing, remember them in advance to make fewer errors:
1. ❌ The receiver cannot be changed randomly: The receiver for each rally is fixed until the serve right is fully transferred to the opposing team. For example, if Player B1 received Team A’s serve in the first point, as long as Team A still holds the serve right, B1 will be the receiver for all subsequent serves.
2. ❌ Serving cannot violate the rules: Besides standing correctly, the shuttlecock’s contact point when serving cannot be higher than the wrist or over the waist, otherwise it’s a foul and you lose the point. This is a serving foul unrelated to rotation, but beginners should pay attention to it anyway.
